I. Elements of Magical realism
l “his eyes became moist from weeping even before he noticed himself…..dazzling glow of joy, It was Melquiades” pg.49 this is magical realism because they recover from insomnia suddenly when the gypsies arrive.
II. Characters
l Urusula Iguran – is kinder letting a stranger in
l Jose Arcadio Buendia – regains his position as the village’s most important citizen
l Pilar Ternara- Jose Arcado’s wife gives birth
l Rebecca– a orphan who brings in insomnia
l Aureliano- considered odd with his actions and no interest in women
l Don Apolinar Mascote- the new magistrate
III. Plot summary
Pilar ternera gave birth to a boy called Arcadio. One day a girl randomly came to their house and so they let her in to her family. However she was always eating dirt and mud, then she started getting insominia and lost her memory. After that people in the village gradually started to get the insomnia disease. Insomnia was cured when the gypsies came back with bearing antidote. Aureliano is thought to be odd since he finds no interest in women and is always in the lab studying. Urusula receives a letter from the newly-arrived magistrate, stating that the house must be painted blue. Aureliano falls in love with the magistrate’s youngest daughter.
IV. Quotes
l “in this town we do not give orders with paper” pg. 56 I like it because Jose is showing his hate towards the new magistrate and doesn’t want anyone above his position
l “Because I must tell you one thing. You and I are still enemies” pg.58 it is interesting how Jose still does a lot of things for the magistrate but yet has his pride saying that he does not like him
V. Themes
l Magical realism- how when the gypsies come in they suddenly cure
l Insomnia- Rebecca brings in the sickness and everyone gets it while they loose their memory as well
l Enemies- Jose does not like the existent of the new magistrate
