I. Elements of Magical realism
l “so many flowers fell from the sky that in the mourning the street were carpeted with a compact cushion and they had to clear them away with shovels” pg. 140 Magical realism is used here with exaggerated truth making it more dramatic.
II. Characters
l Colonel Aureliano Buenida- notices he only fights for his pride
l Colonel Gerneldo Matrquiz- was Colonel Aureliano’s friend and was sentenced to death together with him
l Jose Arcadio- Dies of a mystery
l Santa Sofiad de la Piedad- gives birth to twins
l Jose Arcadio Buenida- Dies under a tree after years
l Rebeca- becomes a hermit living her rest of her life in a solitary
III. Plot summary
After liberals have lost the war, Colonel and his friend Colonel Gerineldo Matquiz, is sentenced to death. Although he is saved the final instant by his brother Jose Arcadio. Then he goes back to fighting again but he realizes he does it only for pride, and then decides to go back to writing poetry. Sometime after Santa Sofiad de la piedad gave birth to twins Jose Arcadio died from a sudden mystery. Rebeca his wife becomes a hermit living her rest of her life in a solitary grief. At the end of the book after many years of being tied on to a tree Jose Arcadio buenida dies.
IV. Quotes
l “Then they went into Jose Arcadio buendia’s room shook him as hard as they could, shouted in his ear, put a mirror in front of his nostrils, but they could not awaken him. Pg. 140 I find this interesting because even after leaving for such a long time it seemed like they seriously wanted him to come back to life.
l “That was perhaps the only mistery that was never cleared up in macoondo” pg.131 Interesting because It shows that macondo is such a small village and that it has always been peaceful.
V. Themes
l Death- In this chapter Death was a major theme. Colonel was sentenced to death, Jose Arcadio died of mystery and at the end Jose Arcadio Buenida died under the tree.
