III. Plot Summary
The Chapter starts with explaining how Colonel Aureliano Buendia making seventeen children with all seventeen different women, while he joined the national war effort leaving macondo. Arcadio becomes a dictator, after he was left in charge of the town while Colonel is out. He starts enjoying his job and orders cruelly to many people. Arcadio married a virgin called Santa sofia introduced by his mum. Pietro Crespi asks Amarnta to marry him again, however Amarnta rejects him very badly that he commits suicide from sadness. Amarnta although coldly rejects later she feels bad and burns her hand on the stove and covers it with a black bandage till she dies.
IV.  Quote
l  “the only external trace that was the tragedy left was the bandage of black gauze that she put on her burnt hand and that she wore until her death” pg.110 It is very sad because Amarnta rejected him because of her pride and she knew that she wanted him and she didn’t want him to die.
l  “He had seventeen male children by seventeen different women” pg. 103 I find this interesting because Colonel changed so much. Before he was not even interested in women and now suddenly he has children from all different women.
V.    Themes
l  Regret- Amarnta although rejected crespi, she regrets doing that because that was not her true feelings and she hurts her self later.
l  Dictatorship- Arcadio enjoys doing this and becomes obsessed with it
