Active reading Journal 1

I.         Elements of magical realism
l  “Right there across the river there are all kinds of magical instruments while we keep on living like donkeys” it seems in the story they believe that there are magical things in the world.
II.      Characters
l  Colonel Aureliano Buendía- Jose’s son
José Arcadio Buendía- founder of town
l  Úrsula Iguarán- Jose’s wife

III.   Plot summary
l  The chapter starts with Colonel Aureliano Buendia remembering the time when he went to discover ice. Colonel’s father was José Arcadio Buendía. Jose was the founder of the town and was obsessed with magical implements. He then was driven into intense study of how to make gold with different kinds of metal which made him concentrate so much that he became anti social. However his obsession shifted to finding and establishing the world. After research he found out that Macondo is surrounded with only water. So he decides to move the place, but his wife and other women strongly disagreed so he gave up and started to put more attention on his two sons.
IV.   Quotes
l  “The world was so recent that many things lacked names” pg.1 it is interesting because it means that this was quite a long time ago, where everything was new just like adam in the bible naming things.
l  “very soon we’ll have good enough and more to pave the floors of the house.” Pg.2  I like it because it seems like Jose is very confident and sure that he will make gold, when its ironic that he will give up.
V.      Themes
l  Past- Colonel is remembering what happened
l  Magical realism- many things are written realistically but with magical tails in it
l  Inventions – studying for new things and naming new things
